| Canal | |
Ever since the Llangollen branch of the Shropshire Union Canal was built at the beginning of the nineteenth century, it has played an important part in Wrenbury life. Although it is half a century since there was significant commercial traffic on the canal, it is alive with recreational boats throughout the summer season (and even all year round for the more hardy folk!). The large lifting bridge where the canal crosses the road is the most notable village landmark, and is believed to be one of only two such bridges in the whole of the UK that are open to road traffic. The current electrically operated bridge was installed only a few years ago, but is faithful to the original design while providing much easier boat navigation. Canal users might want to check out Grindley Brook, a few miles south west of Wrenbury, with its canal locks. It is also the starting point of the Sandstone Trail waymarked walk. |
